## The call: “We have no water”

It’s a weekday evening in late summer, on acreage outside Weatherford. The phone is answered by a person, who asks a few questions:

- **Is the well breaker on, or did it trip?** It tripped once, was reset, and tripped again.
- **What does the pressure gauge by the tank read?** Zero.
- **When did the water stop, and was there a storm?** An hour ago, after an afternoon thunderstorm.
- **Any livestock waiting?** Two horses and a stock tank.

A breaker that trips twice means leave it off. With animals involved and a likely storm cause, a tech is dispatched that evening. The owner hears the after-hours price on the phone before anyone drives out.

## At the wellhead: test before touching anything

The tech starts at the pressure tank and works down:

1. **Supply voltage** at the disconnect: normal.
2. **Pressure switch:** contacts intact, setting 40/60.
3. **Control box** (a three-wire pump): the start capacitor reads open.
4. **Insulation reading** on the pump wire and motor from the surface: within normal range, so the motor and wire are likely fine.
5. **Tank pre-charge:** 25 psi against a 40 psi cut-in. Low, but a separate issue.

## The written options

Before any work, the owner gets it in writing:

- **Replace the start capacitor.** In this scenario, the storm-damaged part that explains the tripping.
- **Recharge the tank to 38 psi**, 2 psi below cut-in, so the pump stops short-cycling.
- The **price of each**, and a note that the motor tested sound, so no pump pull is needed.

## The repair and the proof

The capacitor is replaced and the tank recharged. The breaker goes back on and the pump starts cleanly. The tech then:

- runs the system through several full cycles, timing each run to confirm at least a minute per start;
- checks pressure and flow at a hose bib;
- confirms the stock tank is filling.

The well wasn’t opened, so it doesn’t need disinfection this time. When a pump is pulled or the well is opened, state rules require disinfection of a drinking-water well, and we do it.

## What the owner keeps

A written record of the readings, the parts replaced and the tank setting. Next time, that record shortens the diagnosis.

## If it had gone the other way

If the insulation reading had failed, the motor or wire would have been damaged. The next step would have been the written price to pull and replace the pump, typically **$1,800–$4,500** at Parker County depths, before any equipment came out.
