Water Well Drilling Weatherford handles well pump repair for homes, barns and ranches across Weatherford and Parker County, and the first job on every call is finding out what actually failed. A house with no water is not always a dead pump. Often the fault is above ground: a pressure switch with burned contacts, a capacitor that has failed in the control box, a tripped breaker, or a waterlogged tank that has been making the pump start dozens of times an hour. HomeGuide’s 2026 cost data puts electrical faults alone at about 30% of well pump service calls.

What we do on the first visit

We start at the pressure tank and work down the well. The switch, tank pre-charge, supply voltage and running amps are checked first, then the pump wire and motor get an insulation reading from the surface. Together those tests tell us whether the problem is in the house, in the control or in the well. If the pump has to come out, you see the replacement price in writing before we set up to pull it.

The failures behind most no-water calls

Pressure switch

The switch at the tank turns the pump on and off. Its contacts pit and burn with every start, and its small sensing tube clogs with sediment and iron. A failing switch leaves the pump off when the gauge drops, or on when it should stop. It is the cheapest fix on a well and one of the most common.

Control box and capacitor

Three-wire submersible pumps have a control box on the wall with a start capacitor and relay. When the capacitor fails the motor hums, draws high amps and trips the breaker. Summer heat in an unshaded well house and lightning surges during North Texas storm season are the usual culprits.

Wiring and splices

The wire runs 200 ft or more down a typical Parker County well. A splice that wasn’t sealed properly, or insulation rubbed through against the casing, shows up as a low insulation reading. It can be repaired, but it means pulling the pump.

The pump itself

Submersible pumps generally last 8 to 15 years. Sand from Paluxy and Twin Mountains wells wears the impellers, and short cycling overheats the motor. A motor that reads open or grounded, or a pump end that turns but can’t lift water to the surface, means well pump replacement.

When the water level is the problem

Texas Water Development Board driller reports show the median new well near Weatherford finished with water standing about 110 ft down, but around Aledo it is closer to 176 ft, and in dry summers the level drops further while the pump runs. If the level falls to the intake, the pump draws air, loses prime and overheats. We measure the static level when the symptoms point that way. Sometimes the right fix is setting the pump lower, sometimes a smaller pump or a pump protector, and sometimes a conversation about whether the well is going dry.

Paying for the repair

Homeowners policies often cover a pump killed by a lightning strike or power surge but not one that simply wore out. Home warranties frequently cap or exclude well equipment. We write down what failed and why, so you have what your insurer or warranty company needs to process the claim.

Typical cost

$150–$600 for most switch, control and wiring repairs

If the pump itself has failed, replacement at the 180–310 ft settings common in Parker County typically runs $1,800–$4,500.

What's included on every well pump repair call

  • Supply voltage and running amps checked at the pressure switch and control box
  • Pressure switch contacts, cut-in and cut-out settings and sensing port inspected
  • Pressure tank pre-charge measured and reset to 2 psi below cut-in
  • Capacitor and relay tested in the control box on three-wire pumps
  • Insulation (megohm) reading on the pump wire and motor from the surface
  • Check valves and pitless adapter checked for leak-back
  • Static water level measured when a dry-running pump is suspected
  • Written findings, with repair and replacement prices side by side

Well Pump Repair: three ways it gets done

Comparison of do-it-yourself, cheapest-bid and to-standard well pump repair
Item Do it yourself Cheapest bid Done to standard
Finding the fault Swap parts until it works Pulls the pump first and replaces it Surface tests of voltage, amps, switch, tank and wire insulation before anything comes out
Pressure switch Contacts filed and reused Replaced, setting left at factory Replaced when pitted, set to the tank pre-charge, sensing port cleared
Short cycling Ignored Switch replaced, tank left waterlogged Tank pre-charge and size checked so the pump runs at least a minute per start
Dry-running pump Reset and hope Bigger pump installed Water level measured; pump set, sized or protected against running dry
Afterwards Water back on Water back on Full cycles tested, well chlorinated if opened, findings written down

How well pump repair works, start to finish

  1. Call and triage

Tell us what the gauge reads, whether the breaker tripped and when the water stopped. We will tell you what is safe to try before we arrive.

  2. Surface tests first

Voltage, amp draw, switch, tank and wire insulation are tested from the surface. Most faults show up here without pulling the pump.

  3. Written options

You get the cause, the fix and the price in writing. If the pump has to come out, you see the replacement price before we pull it.

  4. Repair, test, disinfect

After the repair we run full pressure cycles, check flow at a hose bib and chlorinate the well if the cap came off.

Well Pump Repair questions

How much does well pump repair cost in Weatherford?

Most repairs that don't require pulling the pump, such as a pressure switch, control box, capacitor or wiring fault, run $150 to $600 including the call. If the motor or pump end has failed, a submersible replacement at typical Parker County depths runs $1,800 to $4,500. You get the price in writing before any work starts.

How do I know if it's the pump or the pressure switch?

Look at the gauge and listen at the tank. If the gauge is below the cut-in pressure (usually 30 or 40 psi) and the switch contacts are open, the switch or its sensing port is the likely fault. If the contacts are closed, power is reaching the pump and the gauge still won't rise, the problem is down the well: the pump, the drop pipe or the water level.

Can a plumber fix a well pump in Texas?

A plumber can repair house plumbing and often the pressure tank. Installing, pulling or repairing the pump in the well for pay requires a pump installer license from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation under Occupations Code chapter 1902. Ask for the license number and check it on TDLR's public search.

Why does my pump run but no water comes out?

The usual causes are a split or unthreaded drop pipe, a worn pump end, a stuck check valve, or a water level that has fallen to the pump intake. A pump that keeps running without delivering water can overheat and fail, so turn it off at the breaker until it has been checked. Our no-water guide covers what to look at first.
